To and Fro

Man, we went places tonight! We started with a Malawian cover of an Australian band – from the infinitely cool Esau Mwamwaya – and ended with an American cover of a German band – from a phantom four-piece called Big Blood. In between that little trip around the world was some stuff out of this world.

We played a couple of tracks from the really quite ace Lucky Dragons album, just released in Oz thanks to Mistletone. And some new High Places, who’ll be releasing on that self-same label in not all that long. How good was Tim’s experimental British electronica bit? And lyrics, too; The Chap singing old-skool lyrics about homos and Sparks giving us an epic choral workout about your mum, amongst other things. These guys have been around for 38 years and put out 21 full-length studio albums, including Angst in My Pants and Gratuitous Sax and Senseless Violins – our sorta guys – I think we’ll be hearing more from them…

Also, also, also! Ratatat again, this time under the guise of playing Bjork. Britain’s Kelpe has put out a great folktronic album which you should hear, and Belgium-ites Low Motion Disco have just released a pretty good slow-disco full-length. A sweet middle bracket, with new here now local Future Happiness going all Brian Wilson on us – you can and indeed must! see them Thursday 26th at Gertrudes on a great bill with the still-wonderful humansixbillion. A bit of NME-baiting with Mystery Jets, remixed by our homme Pilooski, and something sweet from Circulatory System ahead of a possible long-awaited new release from them.

And – how could I forget – some new Qua. Man, he’s the man. I mean, man. What a man. Lost for words, man.
